Lionel Messi was substituted due to a knee injury, according to Mauricio Pochettino, PSG manager.

Mauricio Pochettino,

the manager of Paris Saint-Germain,

has confirmed that Lionel Messi was substituted during Sunday’s triumph over Lyon due to an injury.

Messi appeared dissatisfied with his replacement,

but Pochettino claimed he had a knock to his left knee.

The 34-year-old will miss PSG’s trip to Metz on Wednesday and is a doubt for next week’s Champions League game against Manchester City.

Pochettino said he noticed “Leo was looking at his knee”.

“We are pleased with the way he played,

” said the former Tottenham manager,

who did not mention Messi’s injury following the game on Sunday.

“He played very well in the first half,

and the only thing missing was a goal.

He played for 76 minutes and, with all the information we had,

we decided to take him off.

“Of course, I’m aware of the situation and accept it for what it is.

“Messi made his third appearance for PSG since entering as a free agent after leaving Barcelona,

and his first at the Parc des Princes,

in a 2-1 win over Lyon. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was unable to

make his home debut sooner due to injury and the international break

with Pochettino admitting his substitution would have stunned observers as PSG chased the winning goal.

“It comes as no surprise to me,

” he added,

“but the focus is always the player’s well-being,

and in this case we felt it was the best thing for him to pull him off.

“It’s logical that all great champions desire to be on the field at all times.

“On Tuesday,

the Argentine star had an MRI,

which revealed evidence of bone bruising,

prompting PSG to schedule a follow-up assessment for Thursday.

PSG, who lead Ligue 1 with 18 points from six games,

visit Montpellier on Saturday night before hosting Manchester City on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes.
