Matt Ritchie admits that he felt his Newcastle United career was over when he left the club.
The 31-year-old came close to joining Bournemouth on deadline day, but the Cherries pulled out due to an injury to Jamal Lewis. He admits, “If I’m being honest, I thought my Newcastle career was over.”
“When I was younger, I went on loan, and when I returned to Portsmouth, I might have stayed longer, but I made the decision to move on and continue to play.”
I’ve always believed in my ability to rise through the ranks. It was difficult mentally and physically to adjust and adapt my preparation because it was probably the first time in my career that I was completely fit and not active. It’s a new type of challenge for me.
“It’s about maintaining your body so you’re ready when called upon, preparing during the week at the level that will be needed for the weekend, and that can be challenging when you haven’t been active for a long time.”
“I feel like I’ve made it through, learned a lot in the last six months, and I’m proud of how I’ve handled those challenges personally.”
