A former top member of the main opposition party in the country has painted a grim picture of Kasoa, a town in the Central Region which seems to be coming up in the news headlines almost all the time for the wrong reasons.
Giving a brief history of Kasoa and how the place came to be what it is as we know it today, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, speaking on Peace FM’s flagship program, morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ with host Kwami Sefa Kayi, explained that the town known as Kasoa today used to be a very small area back in the 1960’s where traders, mainly of livestock from the northern part of the country and Burkina Faso converged to sell their stock to people, mainly butchers.
As time went by, traders from these areas and other west African countries also started trading they and eventually started settling there, he furthered. According to him, in the 1980’s when the PNDC government led by former President JJ Rawlings were in power, there were lots a number of raids at places such as Ashaiman because of criminal activities. These raids by the military often resulted in the demolishing of structures which belonged to alleged criminals. Most of these people according to Allotey Jacobs moved to Kasoa.
With the place growing having people with questionable character and from different backgrounds, it was only a matter of time that such a place became a hub for lawlessness and criminal activities. He stated that, he was not surprised that people like Hon. Hawa Koomson has to be aggressive in certain situations just to ensure stability, since according to him, if one takes things lightly, they would be buried alive.
