THE INSTANCES OF ROBBERY IN AND OUTSIDE THE UNIVERSITY, SOME MEASURES TO CURB THEM
When he was asked to write about measures to help prevent robberies in and around campus, this was what Mr Stephen Agbeli a member of TEAM PAAKWESI PIPER, scribbled:
“The society and the world at large is faced with unforeseen circumstances which often cannot be averted simply because we are taken unawares by these circumstances/instances by some unknown assailants.
These criminals are ubiquitous and AAMUSTED (erstwhile UEW-K) is no exception.
The robbery instances in and outside the vicinity of the university executed by these criminals are rampant hence causing fear and panic in students most especially during the examination era.
However, some measures could be adopted to curb the instances of robbery in and outside the university for students to live in a disposition free from crime and trauma.
In the first place, CCTV cameras should be installed at vantage points on campus. This will go a long way to reduce instances of robbery and deter potential smash-and-grabbers from attacking both students and lecturers in the university community.
In addition, security lights should be installed at becloud places for clear visibility in order to prevent these criminals from operating in the dark. This can be initiated by working hand-in-hand with the management of the university thereby identifying the places most especially outside the university for the lights to be installed for the welfare of students who are non-hall residents.
Last but not least, there should be 24/7 police patrol outside the walls of the university for the wellbeing of the students who are non-hall residents in the situation where they return from night studies. This will help secure the life of any student who unfortunately fall prey to these criminals.
I believe when these strategies/mechanisms are adopted and implemented, students will feel at home and adequately prepare for academic work thus academic excellence since inquisitorial spirit is the hallmark for the pursuance of academic knowledge.”
For we at Voice Of The Voiceless with PaaKwesi Aduama-Larbi Peter as our Editor In-Chief, we think if these steps are taken into consideration and should the safety of students be given the commensurate priority it deserves, we believe some of these unforeseen circumstances could be forestalled.
