Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Member of Parliament for Suame and leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus in Parliament has narrated on JoyNews how Alban Bagbin Sumana became the Speaker for the 8th Parliament.
According to him, Bagbin never became the Speaker by virtue of him exceeding Mike Oquaye with votes but by consensus.
He said the consensus became a necessity when the House that night was characterized by chaos, kicking and snatching of ballot boxes.
The Suame MP said he had made a proposal that Bagbin should be sworn in by the Chief Justice after which there would be a re-run of the Speakership race but his proposal was rejected by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He said they later agreed on choosing Bagbin as the Speaker.
“My associates went into the gathering and came to state that they protested that recommendation that we ought to do a re-run. So we were thoroughly considering, and it was as yet during the time spent further commitment that we arrived at the resolution that we are, let us embrace Bagbin as an agreement up-and-comer,” he said.
The agreement to choose Bagbin as the next Speaker by both parties according to Osei Kyei Mensah was the reason why Clark failed to mention any numbers while declaring Bagbin the next Speaker.
