Haruna Iddrisu, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in an interview on Joy Prime TV argued that it is unconstitutional for President Akuffo Addo’s ministers who are still in office to still parade themselves as ministers meanwhile the President’s first term in office has expired.
Haruna argued in respect of President Akuffo Addo’s directive that his ministers maintain their respective positions until he officially approves their positions or makes new appointments.
Frema Osei Opare, Chief of Staff of the President explained that the directive corresponds with the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845).
According to him, while Section 14 (1) of Act 845, states that all ministers, deputy ministers, presidential staffers, such as the Chief of Staff and the Executive Secretary to the President, and non-career Ambassadors and High Commissioners ceased to hold office when the President’s tenure ended on January 7, Section 14(2) of Act 845, on the other hand, allows the President to appoint a person to perform the functions of all those mentioned above for a specified period of time.
Haruna Iddrisu argued in his interview on Monday that there is nothing like “care taker” ministers.
Meanwhile former President John Dramani Mahama made Haruna an acting Minister for Communications in 2013 making reference to this same Section 14(2) of Act 845.
Today Haruna Iddrisu has soon forgotten how he was made a Minister in charge of communications in 2013 by John Dramani Mahama . Is this hypocrisy on the part of Haruna Iddrisu?
