Dissertation Outline For Masters’ and Doctorate/ PhD

Abstract– It gives a summary of the salient areas on the entire dissertation topic written already. Basically, an abstract is written only after the five chapters of the dissertation are written. It shouldn’t be plenty, but reflective of the ideas elucidated. It should be straight to the point of relevant areas. Jargons that are not easily understood must be clearly explained. It should determine how you write your dissertation and what readers should expect briefly.
Proposal-Every proposal should have a topic first. Give a brief abstract especially future expectations. It contains the following;

a)      Introduction- It should be brief highlighting all salient information of the research)
  i) statement of the problemii)
ii) Objectives of the research/dissertation
iii) Scope
iv)  Significance of the study
v)   Organization of the study

b)    Literature Review must be given highlighting the areas of the dissertation
c)     Research Methodology- It includes the data methods and instruments theory and plan.
d)    Data Presentation and Analysis OR Results- The proposal should briefly elucidate what type of analysis should be employed whether it is going to be qualitative or quantitative analysis or both.
e)    Brief description of how the summary, conclusions, and recommendations are going to be tailored.
Chapter One (1)- Introduction
It should contain all salient information
a)      Background of the dissertation
b)     Statement of the problem
c)     Objectives of the research/dissertation
d)     Scope
e)     Limitation
f)     Significance of the study
g)    Organization of the study

Chapter Two (2)- Literature Review

This is where you clearly elucidate the salient areas on the subject matter of the research topic. The concepts and the entire literature here must hinge on the objectives of the research.

The Literature Review contents must be chronologically written. It should include the definition of the subject matter of the dissertation, the merits and demerits of the subject matter inherent in the subject matter, etc.

Relevant theories and concepts in relation to the subject are also important.

Lastly, citations are needed.

Chapter Three (3) – Research Methods

You need to give a brief introduction to the research methods you deem appropriate to employ in your research findings. You need to give a theoretical framework of your research methods. You need to clearly state whether you are going to use qualitative or quantitative methods or both. Data methods such as primary data or secondary data should be taken into consideration. Indicate which primary data to employ, is it going to be an experiment, observation, interviews, focus group, brainstorming, etc. Secondary data where you will dwell on data that exist elsewhere, that is, on the internet, published sources, government agencies, etc.

Chapter Four- Results/Presentation and Analyses of Data

This is where data collection instruments employed are analyzed to validate claims. There must be an introduction explaining how and which methods were used, whether it was quantitative or qualitative or both. The analyses of the findings should be based on the objectives or problem statement of the dissertation. Normally, I recommend the analyses to be done thematically emanating from the objectives or problem statement of the dissertation. The analyses of the data should be sufficient enough to solve the problem statement itemized in chapter 1.

Chapter 5 (Five)- Discussion/ Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation of ResultsThe interpreted data are evaluated on the bases of summary, conclusions, and recommendations for students, researchers, study areas, and other organizations and/or stakeholders. Additionally, this chapter clearly highlights a number of future suggested research or dissertation topics.

This chapter must be unbiased and written based on the logical reports of the results in chapter four. This chapter also is able to validate problems and give recommendations to ameliorate them.
