The Golden Boy award is an annual award given to the best young player of the year. It was first awarded to Van Der Vart in 2003. The previous winner of this award is Joao Felix after a great season with Benfica which forced a big money move to Atletico Madrid for the youngster. It was announced earlier on that Erling Braut Haaland, the Dortmund striker has beaten the likes of his teammate, Jadon Sancho , Davies and Ansu Fati to this award. He is set to be awarded this award after his exploits with Salzburg, Dortmund and Norway last season and this season so far.
Erling Haaland broke on the scenes after scoring 9 goals against Honduras in the U-20 World Cup played in 2020. The match ended 12-0 in Norway’s favor and Haaland won the golden boot at the end of the competition. He made his UCL debut against Gent and announced himself with a hat trick in the first half. He netted 8 goals in the group stages and finished as 2nd top scorer in the competition with 10, falling just 5 short to Robert Lewandowski who ended the competition with 15 goals. After a scintillating half season with Salzburg, he made a move to Borussia Dortmund where he has now scored 19 goals in 21 games. He finished as top scorer in the group stages of the UEFA Nations League with 6 goals for Norway.
Coming in 2nd was Ansu Fati who set a lot of records particularly those indicating the youngest players to score in the competitions he features. Alphonso Davies came 3rd after being voted 2nd best defender in Europe and winning the quintuple with Bayern Munich. Sancho was voted 4th after producing 20+ goals and 20+ assists in all competitions joining a whole loads of great players to achieve such feats.
The other six making up the top ten include Camavinga of Rennes, Kulusevski of Juventus, Foden of Manchester City, Szoboloszlai of Salzburg, Saka of Arsenal and Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid. Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood finished 12th.
