~ Lupita Nthombé

The doors were shut
The sun was shining its darkness again
They gritted and pointed
With their chocolate teeth
They laughed
They mocked our turtle progress

As if in wait
They jumped and danced to the beat
Of our worried hearts

But they won’t scare us
They can’t
Not today
We won’t stop
We won’t stop

We would work till our heartbeat deafens them
Like a surgeon’s scalpel
We would continue to cut into progress
Until the sutures are placed aright
And the surgery is over
Until post op is completed
And our wounds heal
Till we are up on our feet
We won’t stop
